Transforming My Life: A Journey of Resilience and Growth

Chapter 1: The Turning Point
Five years ago, I faced a life-altering incident that ignited a fire within me. A counselor once told me, "You are capable of trying anything... Don't give up." Those words became my mantra.
Reflecting on that fateful day, I vividly remember July 2nd, the day I was on my way to Catholic Charities for my last shift before a long weekend. The speed limit was 50 mph on that road, and the intersection was notorious for accidents. The driver who hit me had just regained her license after a suspension for driving uninsured and promptly canceled her insurance. A week later, she attempted a left turn, misjudging her timing, and I had no chance to stop.
My vehicle was a wreck. The impact spun my car around multiple times, leaving me facing the wrong way in a busy intersection. Miraculously, I was alive. Emergency responders were on the scene in minutes, having been nearby. When I regained consciousness, I was enveloped in white—smoke from the airbags and the chaos of the crash. It felt like an eternity before I was extracted from the wreckage, and I initially mistook the transmission fluid leaking beneath my car for my own blood.
That day marked my first ambulance ride. I emerged with extensive bruising but no broken bones. However, within a week, I learned I had sustained my second traumatic brain injury in under two years. The steering wheel airbag had knocked my sunglasses into my head, aggravating an old injury. I was devastated and mentally shattered. Unlike my previous recovery, my neurologist recommended therapy in addition to medical treatment, a decision that proved transformative.
Section 1.1: The Road to Recovery
The orthopedic specialist informed me I might never walk unaided again. I had been using a scooter or wheelchair even before my first injury, and now it felt like that would be my permanent reality. During recovery, screens and monitors were off-limits; they interfered with my healing process, forcing me to consider a new career away from computers.
Yet, I prayed daily, and the counseling sessions provided a glimmer of hope. As I battled nausea and weight loss, I found myself craving sushi—a food I had never eaten before. Surprisingly, it nourished me, and I indulged in it almost daily for a month.
In physical therapy, I focused on exercises for my left eye, which had been damaged. The counselor's words continued to resonate: "You are capable of trying anything. If you fail, try again or learn from it. Don't give up." This motivation pushed me to explore new learning opportunities.
Subsection 1.1.1: Embracing New Challenges
I enrolled in an online program and completed my Master's Degree in Sustainable Management in just two years. Whenever I struggled to read the monitors, I hired someone to assist me. Once I was cleared for limited screen time, my studies flourished.
Music had always been a passion of mine, so I decided to pick up a ukulele, believing its size would make it easier to play than a guitar. Although I’m still mastering it, it’s been a joyful endeavor.
Section 1.2: A New Beginning
Eventually, I returned to work with restrictions on computer use. I left my old job and began investigating financial crimes for the State of Florida, a role that required FBI training but allowed for less screen time. Unfortunately, the COVID pandemic led to my relocation to Tallahassee, where I faced a job loss due to my inability to work from home.
Despite this setback, I taught myself programming, which ultimately led me to my current position as an operations analyst focusing on automation. After two years, I received a promotion tailored to my skills and contributions.
Chapter 2: A New Perspective
My journey led me to a new doctor who challenged my self-imposed limitations. When I expressed that my disability prevented me from exercising, she looked me in the eye and said, "Bullshit." Initially taken aback, I chose to stay with her. She enrolled me in aqua physical therapy, an experience that reignited my ability to walk.
As I began to shed weight rapidly, I approached a significant milestone—losing 275 pounds, surpassing my original weight. I refused to give in. I demonstrated what true determination looks like.
Our bodies are incredible and complex systems. Perhaps my previous head injuries fortified my resolve to never surrender. Those who doubted me are now astonished by my transformation, and I find myself astonished as well. Never give up!
