Revolutionizing Image Editing with Photoshop's Generative Fill

Chapter 1: Introduction to Photoshop's Generative Fill

Adobe has recently released a beta version of Photoshop that features an astounding new AI tool known as ‘generative fill.’ This innovative feature enables users to add, modify, or remove elements from images in a non-destructive manner, all through simple text prompts.

The results are nothing short of impressive. Below are some examples showcasing the capabilities of generative fill.

Section 1.1: OutPainting Techniques

Outpainting is a fascinating technique that allows users to extend the edges of an image, rather than cropping it. For instance, here’s a close-up of a butterfly captured with my Nikon camera.

Photoshop can intelligently interpret the additional space with just a click of the 'generate' button, eliminating the need for detailed prompts.

Isn’t that remarkable? Here’s another outpainting example. I used an AI prompt in Midjourney to create the initial Baroque-style image, and then I employed Photoshop’s generative fill to expand it.

Section 1.2: Merging Images with Generative Fill

An exciting feature of generative fill is its ability to seamlessly blend multiple images. Here are two AI-generated images of robot street musicians.

To combine these, I placed them side by side in Photoshop, ensuring they were approximately the same size. The backgrounds differed significantly.

By selecting the central area, I prompted Photoshop to merge them, resulting in a surprisingly smooth transition.

However, this band was missing a drummer, so I chose a rectangular section between the two robots and requested Photoshop to generate a steampunk robot drummer.

Photoshop intelligently generates new content that aligns with the context of the overall image.

Chapter 2: Inpainting and Subject Re-Placement

Inpainting is another incredible feature that allows users to replace parts of an image or add new content that harmonizes with the existing surroundings. Below is a portrait of a woman created in Midjourney.

Before inpainting, I decided to extend the portrait using generative fill.

Next, I selected her face and prompted Photoshop to add a Catwoman mask.

The result was impressive and would have taken considerable time if done manually.

Another notable AI feature is the ability to quickly select the subject of an image. Photoshop now includes a ‘Select subject’ button.

Once the subject is highlighted, you can remove the background or, more effectively, invert the selection and introduce a new background. Here, I added a beach background prompt.
