Reflections on a Year of Writing and Growth on Medium

Chapter 1: A Year in Review
Over the past year, I’ve dedicated my time to writing on Medium, and I believe it’s time to reflect on what I’ve learned and how I’ve progressed in this journey.
Starting in February 2021, I published a story that remains my most viewed to date. However, don’t let the high view count fool you; it hasn’t translated into significant earnings—mostly because 91% of the views came from external sources.
In February, I managed to publish 10 stories, bringing in a total of $3.83. While it was a month filled with effort, the financial outcome was less than impressive.
As March rolled in, things took a turn for the better. I released a story that captured considerable internal attention (83%), leading to increased earnings.
Despite receiving only half the views of my most popular piece, this story generated six times the revenue—quite astonishing! Throughout March, I published five stories and earned $18.17, marking a notable improvement.
In April, I only published one story, but it continued to attract viewers from March, resulting in $8.02. Between May and August, work commitments limited my writing to just one story in June, yet I still managed to earn $22.63 during that period. This was surprising, considering my initial earnings in the first two months were merely a couple of dollars.
By September, I wrote two new stories, one of which has achieved 1,000 views, leading to earnings of approximately $10.50. In October, I published another two articles that didn’t gain much traction but still resulted in $22, likely due to the ongoing popularity of my earlier pieces.
November through February became particularly thrilling as several of my works were curated. In November, I put out three articles; two were selected for broader distribution, despite low view counts. However, one piece garnered 1,300 views and brought in $17.27.
In December, I earned $13.44 from a single story that received minimal attention. January was productive, with eight articles published, two of which were curated, but again, views were limited, resulting in total earnings of $23.11.
Finally, in February, I have published one curated article so far, which unfortunately has low visibility, yielding around $7.50.
The key takeaways from this experience are clear: consistency is crucial for increasing earnings. Curated stories don’t necessarily correlate with high views or substantial income. Furthermore, high view counts do not guarantee greater financial returns, as various factors come into play.
In conclusion, I feel content with my first year of writing on Medium. While there are moments of disappointment, I now understand that to succeed financially in writing, prioritizing quality over quantity and maintaining consistency are essential.
