Chapter 1: Understanding Burnout
Not everyone's experience in the same workplace is the same. Some situations can lead to transformative life changes. The insights I gained from my journey through burnout are priceless. This experience fundamentally altered the trajectory of my professional life.
So, what led to my burnout?
Upon reflection, several factors contributed: - A workplace with high employee turnover - Daily exposure to vicarious trauma - An unsupported environment for processing trauma - Experiences of workplace bullying - Neglecting self-care - Poor sleep habits - A perfectionist mindset - Lack of activities outside of work to look forward to
Each of these elements added to the pressure I felt at work. Unfortunately, I failed to take proactive measures to manage the situation.
What followed was a breaking point: I could no longer step foot in my workplace. The physical and emotional toll became unbearable. For a long time, I battled these feelings, enduring panic attacks and various symptoms. I often told myself, “You must be resilient,” thinking that I could push through.
Section 1.1: Seeking Help
Eventually, I decided to seek help and visited a General Practitioner (GP). The wait felt endless; in retrospect, I realized I was experiencing a panic attack while waiting. The only reason I stayed was my strong desire to confront what I was facing.
Unfortunately, the first GP I consulted, and even the next one at the same clinic, did not take my concerns seriously, which left me feeling dismissed.
Determined, I conducted my own research and found a GP who specialized in mental health. Since then, I have been receiving the support I need.
In reality, that day marked just the beginning of a journey that has spanned three years, with no end in sight.

With the guidance of my empathetic GP, we developed a comprehensive plan. My support system included: - Psychological support - Psychiatric assistance - Medication - Regular check-ins with my GP - Strategies from my treatment team aimed at alleviating my symptoms
This was a considerable amount of work, and I dedicated substantial time to addressing the factors within my control.
During this journey, I recognized a crucial truth: prioritizing self-care is essential. Work does not define life. The goal is not merely the destination; it’s about appreciating the journey itself.

Did I return to my previous workplace?
I did attempt to go back, but I ultimately decided not to stay. Why? Through the support I received and the personal growth I experienced, I came to understand that the environment no longer suited me, and that realization was perfectly acceptable.

Implementing these strategies has brought me to a vastly improved place. I continue to manage the effects of Major Depressive Disorder and Generalized Anxiety Disorder, but now I possess the tools needed to support myself.
