Navigating Job Uncertainty with a Positive Mindset

Chapter 1: Embracing Change

I vividly recall the message that appeared on Teams: “Our wonderful Sarina will be wrapping up on 18 Oct.”

It’s official; after several contract renewals, my time here is finally coming to an end.

The news hit me hard, akin to receiving a devastating diagnosis. For a few days, I found myself in a dark place.

However, this time, my concern wasn’t about financial stability.

Small Adjustments, Significant Impact

For the past three years, I’ve been grappling with financial stress.

I ventured into entrepreneurship four years ago, initially experiencing promising growth.

With three years' worth of savings to launch my business, I believed I was set.

However, my initial investment dwindled more quickly than anticipated.

Although the business remained profitable, I became increasingly anxious about spending.

Whenever I enjoyed a successful month, I would save as much as possible for the unforeseen challenges ahead.

Yet, no matter how much I saved, I never felt truly secure.

My mind was consumed with worry about increasing my income.

The more I fixated on it, the more elusive it felt.

Ultimately, I chose to return to full-time employment while simultaneously developing side projects to diversify my earnings.

After relocating back to Australia, where I had spent the majority of my career, I reconnected with my network and continued to grow.

Just two weeks post-move, a contracting opportunity arose—sooner than I anticipated, and I was grateful for it.

Determined not to let financial anxiety take control again, I implemented a small but impactful change.

Over recent months, I began budgeting—something I had previously avoided.

Each Sunday, I now allocate an hour to track my expenditures—reviewing what I’ve spent, identifying potential cutbacks, assessing impulse purchases, and calculating my savings.

To my surprise, I managed to save 30% of my paycheck.

I promptly deposited this amount into a high-yield savings account.

With my contract extended beyond the initial one-month period, I have rebuilt my financial cushion and improved my financial situation.

This journey has taught me that life is unpredictable, and anxiety escalates when we feel powerless.

To mitigate this anxiety, I concentrated on factors within my control.

Instead of depending solely on my job for security, I learned to manage my expenses effectively.

Though a minor adjustment, it significantly altered my perspective on my financial circumstances.

Time to Explore Side Projects

I also redirected my focus to my side projects.

Since returning to a full-time role, I haven’t devoted a substantial amount of time to my side endeavors.

However, steady progress has laid a solid foundation.

With increased time and effort, I believe the income from these projects will grow.

This realization provides reassurance—it means I can invest more effort into them to sustain my lifestyle until I secure another position.

Having previously run a business, I understand I can forge my own path when necessary.

The skills I’ve acquired have expanded my options in the job market.

If you've contemplated launching a side project but are unsure where to start, begin small.

Consider how much time you can dedicate weekly; even an hour is better than none.

It may be challenging at first, but view it as a learning phase.

Enjoy the process while you still have the security of a full-time job.

Position yourself to create for enjoyment, rather than solely for income.

Fostering the Right Environment

If financial concerns are not my primary focus, what is?

It’s the people I work with.

In recent months, I’ve developed a strong emotional connection to my team and the workplace.

How could I not, surrounded by wonderful colleagues, an excellent manager, and stakeholders with whom I’ve built strong relationships?

Some individuals leave corporate environments due to feeling trapped in a monotonous routine, poor management, or a toxic culture.

However, when you find yourself in a space that fosters growth, collaboration, and offers flexibility with a stable income, it’s tough to walk away.

Having previously experienced toxic workplaces, I now cherish being in a nurturing environment where I can continue to learn and evolve.

Climbing the corporate ladder isn’t my priority; I seek to work with great people without constantly looking over my shoulder.

I value the flexibility and autonomy provided by a manager who trusts me to perform well.

To me, this is far more valuable than monetary compensation.

Final Reflections

While I am saddened by the impending conclusion of my contract, I am resolved to approach this transition with optimism and positivity.

Rather than stressing over external circumstances, I’m concentrating on the gains I’ve made:

  • I secured this contract earlier than expected.
  • My engagement has been extended to nearly six months from the initial one-month term.
  • I have broadened my network.
  • I have clarity on how I wish to enhance my skill set.
  • I have additional accomplishments to enrich my resume.

Opportunities lie ahead, and I am confident my skill set will eventually lead to new prospects.

When one door closes, it can be intimidating, but it’s also a chance to reflect, recalibrate, and remind yourself that you have control over your own journey.

You don’t need to have everything mapped out—just take one step at a time.

And that’s precisely what I’m doing.
