# Mastering Hot Corners on Your MacBook: A Hidden Productivity Gem

Written on

Chapter 1: Introduction to Hot Corners

It's time to explore a feature on your Mac that often goes unnoticed: Hot Corners. While I may not be the first to embrace new technology, I believe there are others who might still be in the dark about this fantastic tool. If you’ve yet to uncover the potential of Hot Corners, keep reading!

Section 1.1: What Are Hot Corners?

Hot Corners enable you to assign specific actions to each corner of your screen. By merely moving your cursor to one of these corners, you can initiate various functions. For instance, if you glide your mouse to the top right corner, your screensaver will activate. Intrigued? There’s much more you can do with this feature!

Section 1.2: Setting Up Your Hot Corners

To customize your Hot Corners, head over to System Preferences. Click on the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen, then navigate to System Preferences > Desktop & Screensaver. Within the Screensaver tab, you’ll find the Hot Corners option located in the bottom right corner.

Configuring Hot Corners in System Preferences

Once you access the Hot Corners menu, you’ll have the ability to assign different actions to each corner of your display.

Subsection 1.2.1: My Personal Hot Corner Setup

Here’s how I’ve configured mine:

  • Top Left: Desktop – Move your cursor here to reveal the desktop.
  • Bottom Left: Application Windows – Displays all open windows of the current application.
  • Bottom Right: Quick Note – Opens a new note in Apple Notes with a simple swipe.
  • Top Right: Start Screen Saver – Activates the screensaver, perfect for when you need to quickly hide your screen.

This last setup is a favorite of mine. I’ve configured my screensaver to showcase Album Artwork (you'll need Apple Music for this). When I take a break, a quick flick of the cursor to the top-right corner allows me to play some music. It’s an efficient way to unwind while making a cup of tea.

Section 1.3: Using Modifiers for Control

If you're like me and sometimes accidentally trigger actions, there’s a solution. While assigning actions, hold down the Command (⌘) key. This modifier requires you to hold it down to activate the Hot Corner, reducing any mishaps.

Section 1.4: Available Actions

Currently, the options for actions are somewhat limited, as shown in the accompanying image. I would love to replace Quick Note with apps like Ulysses or Notability. Thankfully, I rely on Alfred 4 for quick access to various shortcuts, which remains an excellent alternative.
