A Letter of Strength: Embracing the Journey of Healing

Chapter 1: A Diagnosis That Changed Everything
Receiving a life-altering diagnosis can feel isolating, yet it’s crucial to remember that you are not alone. You may find hope in alternative therapies that pave the way to healing. This story is one of resilience and faith, demonstrating that if we can navigate this challenge, so can you. Miracles unfold every day, and it's essential to stack your deck for the best possible outcome.
In early March, my beloved daughter was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of breast cancer, affecting less than 1% of those diagnosed worldwide. Though I considered flying from my home in Jamaica to support her, she and her husband encouraged me to remain here. As I navigate the complexities of this situation, I find myself still in Jamaica, entangled in bureaucratic delays that keep me from being by her side.
For weeks, our communication has relied on sterile text messages. I know she has been unable to articulate the challenges she faces in her healing journey. This disease, treated with harsh surgeries and toxic chemicals, often leaves us feeling disfigured and depleted. Medical professionals may inflict suffering in their efforts to heal us. The arduous path involves dismantling terrifying cancer cells before rebuilding health anew.
As the weeks pass, I realize how profoundly life has altered. I am no longer the person I was just three months ago, and I know you feel the same transformation.
Instead of my usual routine of writing daily articles from my overflowing notebook, I find myself unable to craft coherent thoughts. The weight of our reality halts my creativity, as I oscillate between fear and a paralyzing lethargy. Your battle with this illness is also my battle; a cancer diagnosis impacts the entire family, community, and network of friends. It creates parallel universes where everyone feels the ripple effects.
As I tap away at my keyboard today, I sense I am gradually emerging from this haze. I know you are making strides too, inching toward the end of the brutal treatments you endure. What challenges will you need to confront next? What will you have to reclaim after surviving these arduous months?
These are not easy questions, but they are necessary as we come to terms with our new reality.
Chapter 2: Celebrating Small Victories
You are doing remarkably well! You've navigated so much change since our last conversation.
Since that unsettling text, you have: - Received the results regarding the troubling cyst. - Braced yourself as doctors informed you of the need for surgery. - Dived into extensive research on medical options. - Chosen an exceptional oncologist, a relationship vital for your treatment journey. It’s essential to feel at ease asking questions and trusting your instincts. - Crafted a plan that gives you confidence and hope. - Endured the difficult surgery and are now healing while starting the first rounds of potent chemotherapy.
As your hair began to shed during the first week of treatment, you took control by shaving your head, refusing to face the daily struggle of watching your hair fall out. Initially upset, you turned to a beautiful human-hair wig, allowing you to feel more like yourself in public.
You and your loving family have also embraced alternative therapies to alleviate the harsh side effects of your treatment. You should be so proud; you’ve handled the past three months like the courageous warrior you are.
This is how our family approaches challenges: accepting the reality, doing what we must, and playing the hand we’ve been dealt to the best of our ability. As Elizabeth Gilbert said, “Ever forward, never backward.”
Kerri Brown - A Letter To My Daughter - This lyric video encapsulates the profound emotions and experiences shared between a mother and daughter during difficult times, highlighting resilience and love.
This week, I finally heard your voice again after months of silence. I understand that discussing your situation has been challenging, and I would never intrude.
Your voice was steady, though it trembled slightly when you mentioned your fears about losing your eyebrows and eyelashes. We spoke for over an hour, and I can still feel the strength in your words.
You expressed: - Your fatigue with well-meaning friends and family constantly asking how you feel. - Your frustration with those who are uncomfortable in their attempts to support you. - Deep sadness over losing your beautiful long hair, and how it feels to be visibly marked as a cancer patient.
Yet, you also recognized the wig as a good disguise, bringing you some comfort. You’ve bravely navigated the emotional rollercoaster of treatment, even addressing the emotional toll of steroids and advocating for changes to your medication.
I admire how you maintain a sense of normalcy for your family, ensuring that sleepovers and healthy meals continue amidst the chaos. You believe that your alternative therapies are helping you manage the potent side effects of chemotherapy.
Alternative therapies hold immense value in the healing process. As someone who has battled MS for years, I credit many of these practices for my continued well-being.
I am delighted that you've prioritized alternative therapies, including:
- Infrared Sauna: Used regularly, it can enhance circulation, detoxify, relieve pain, and improve overall well-being.
- Cold Plunge Bath: Popularized by Wim Hof, this practice builds resilience and reduces inflammation.
- Acupuncture: Your choice of a skilled practitioner in Kansas City is guiding you through meditation to help eliminate the chemotherapy toxins from your body. This ancient practice has proven effective for various ailments.
You've also committed to consuming reverse osmosis filtered water and kombucha, which benefits your immune system and digestive health.
Your commitment to a clean diet, free from processed foods, while allowing occasional indulgences shows your strength. You know that sugar can be a challenge, but finding healthier substitutes will help satisfy your cravings.
I love you dearly. Even from afar, I am with you every day, and I promise to be by your side soon.
