When faced with unkind remarks or actions that trigger painful emotions, what do we experience? Often, it manifests as a sinking feeling, coupled with self-perceptions of inadequacy or unlovability.
I found myself trapped in a cycle of shame, feeling worse day by day, and my self-criticism intensified. As I withdrew from friends and family, my situation deteriorated, leaving me in a state of despair. This negativity only served to amplify my struggles.
I came to a realization: I have the power to choose how I respond to offense. The words of others can only hurt us if we allow them to.
As Seneca wisely stated, “If someone mocks your appearance, consider whether there’s truth to their words.” If the criticism holds truth, then why be offended? If it’s nonsense, why should it affect us at all?
Recognizing that our bodies respond to our emotions shapes our reality. Our reactions can significantly impact our lives.
In Lee Ki Ju’s insightful book, The Dignity of Words, he discusses the historical contributions of Seong Dae Joong, Lee Deok Moo, and Park Jae Hwa, who produced the book titled “Cheong Seong Jab Gi” (????) in Korean. This work compiles valuable advice from the Tang dynasty, applicable to modern life, including etiquette and interpersonal communication.
One phrase from the book states, “Those who lack internally have verbose words.” This highlights how careless words can impact our character. The language we use not only defines us but also influences our experiences and those of others.
The power of our chosen words cannot be overstated. They can bring about healing and positive transformations in our lives.
Reflecting on my past, I realized I often engaged in harsh self-talk. Moving forward, my priority is to nurture a more encouraging inner dialogue.
Bruce Lee once said, “Avoid speaking negatively about yourself, even as a joke. Your body perceives it all. Words carry energy and shape our reality.”
Self-love and care are essential. To raise our spirits, we must treat ourselves with kindness. We often lack external support, making it crucial to cultivate our own inner sanctuary—a refuge that offers strength and resilience during tough times.
The love we nurture within ourselves can positively impact our lives and those around us. I’ve committed to empowering myself, forgiving past mistakes, and treating myself as I aspire to be.
I am strong, capable, and deserving of success.
With positivity and compassion, let’s face the challenges within our minds together.
So, have you been cheering yourself on?
