Overview of Zcash
Zcash (ZEC) stands out among numerous altcoins due to its two defining characteristics: robust security and strong privacy measures. The inception of Zcash dates back to 2013 when it began as a different initiative called Zerocoin, developed by a team from the Computer Science Department at Johns Hopkins University, including Matthew Green, Christina Garman, Ian Miers, and Aviel Rubin. In 2014, this evolved into Zerocash, leading to the official launch of Zcash in October 2016, alongside the establishment of the Zcash Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to advancing the Zcash ecosystem.
Team Behind Zcash
Zcash boasts a highly respected team, led by CEO Zooko Wilcox, an expert in computer security and the head of Least Authority Enterprises. He is joined by Alessandro Chiesa, a computer science professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and co-founder of Zcash. Notably, Matthew D. Green, a cryptographer from Johns Hopkins, and Roger Ver, an early investor, were also crucial to its development. Additionally, Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin serves as an advisor to the project.
Zcash's Purpose
The primary goal of Zcash is to enhance privacy in cryptocurrency transactions. It achieves this by not disclosing transaction details on the blockchain, utilizing two key techniques: sender and recipient obfuscation. This privacy is upheld through the Zero Knowledge Proof algorithm, which ensures sensitive information remains confidential, contrasting with Bitcoin's transparency. The Zero Knowledge Proof concept, developed in the 1980s by MIT scholars, allows transaction verification without revealing private data, ensuring that keys remain secure and cannot be hacked.
Zcash offers several advantages, allowing users to make transactions, investments, and donations confidently, assured of both transparency and confidentiality.
Deepening Understanding of Zcash
In the introduction, I highlighted Zcash's prominence as an altcoin distinguished by its security and privacy features, akin to Monero (XMR). With origins in the Zerocoin project of 2013, Zcash was officially launched in October 2016 alongside the Zcash Foundation.
Zcash Protocol
Units and Divisibility: Zcash operates using ZEC as its unit of account, represented by the ticker symbol "ZEC". In homage to Bitcoin, the smallest unit, a zatoshi, equals 0.00000001 ZEC (one-hundred-millionth of a ZEC).
Funding Structure: Zcash allocates a portion of each block reward to support protocol development and repay initial investors. In its first four years, 10% of the block reward was directed to the Founders Reward fund, benefiting the Electric Coin Co., Zcash Foundation, and early investors. Following network upgrade 4, 8% of the block reward will transition to the Dev Fund, managed by a Major Grants Review Committee.
Scalability: Ongoing efforts are in place to enhance scalability through various strategies at both the protocol (layer 1) and application (layer 2) levels.

Like many cryptocurrencies, Zcash relies on miners to validate transactions on the blockchain. While all nodes assist in this verification, miners play a crucial role in ensuring network security through a proof-of-work algorithm. This means miners use computational power to compete in generating new blocks. The first miner to solve the correct calculation for a block receives the standard block reward, along with transaction fees associated with that block.
Zcash's team strongly advises joining a mining pool for a more stable income based on contributed hash rate, rather than relying solely on solo mining.
